Jess Hallett: Kate Moss blew me away

Kate Moss bowled over casting director Jess Hallett when dressed as a "little waif" for John Galliano.

The 41-year-old model is one of the biggest names in fashion after being discovered aged 14. She has worked with dozens of renowned labels and designers over the years, such as Gucci and Burberry.

Jess, whose work includes hiring models for all the Alexander McQueen ready-to-wear collections, still remembers first setting eyes on a young Kate when the blonde beauty was just 15.

“I went to a John Galliano show in the Duke of York Barracks. I happened to be standing next to Sarah Doukas [the founder of Storm Model Management] watching the show," Jess recalled to British newspaper The Independent. "Kate Moss was in the show, as a little waif, a nymph... It was 1989. I said, ‘Oh my God, she’s gorgeous!’ And Sarah said: ‘She’s mine.’ Then we got chatting – I said I needed a job, and she said she’d give me one!”

Jess' career has gone from strength to strength since then and after a decade at Storm, she co-founded Darling Productions alongside her friend Sarah Murray.

For Jess, the most important part of her job is selecting models who have a fresh and unique look from those already in the industry,

“Everything is about the new – every show is about how many models they’ve got in it that no one has ever seen before. That’s the thing now," she emphasised.

She's stayed close with Kate since the day she saw her on Galliano's runway and even co-authored her 2012 book, as well as being the maid of honour at the star's wedding to Jamie Hince.
