Isabella Burley maintains 'fluid' outlook at Helmut Lang

Isabella Burley is trying to be as “fluid as possible” in her new role at Helmut Lang.

The 26-year-old Dazed editor was tapped as the fashion house’s first-ever editor-in-residence earlier this year, and has already showed off her expertise with her debut campaign for the brand last month (Jul17).

Her new appointment has also seen her tap Hood By Air designer Shayne Oliver to create a capsule collection for Helmut Lang, though Burley remained coy on whether more big names will be brought on board for collaborations.

"I think it’s about what’s right for each designer and what makes sense, so there’s not a strict seasonal system or approach with it; it’s not like one season in, one season out,” she told “That might work for one designer, but it might not for someone else, so I think we’re trying to be as fluid as possible in the way we work."

Oliver’s line will debut during New York Fashion Week in September and the designer himself also appears in the new advertisements.

While Burley didn’t reveal what future partnerships are in store, the journalist has confirmed that there is another side project in the works; each month will see a different artist collaborate with Helmut Lang on special pieces.

"I think the relationship between Helmut Lang and artists was something that I was very interested in. I think he really pioneered that," she explained of the brand’s founding designer, who left his namesake brand and retired from fashion in 2005.

"That really felt like something that I wanted to explore... We wanted it to be very cross-generational and I’m excited for people to see the images that have been selected.”
