Iris Apfel designs new Macy's INC collection
Iris Apfel has added Macy's to her growing list of collaborators.
The 94-year-old fashionista has always worked in the style arena, starting at Women’s Wear Daily before opening her own textile firm with late husband Carl.
In recent years the trendsetter has found herself in demand as both a model and designer, working with everyone from MAC to Kate Spade. Now it’s the turn of U.S. department store Macy's to recruit Iris, teaming up to create a 40-piece capsule collection with its INC brand.
“I was called by Macy’s. They said they were looking for someone. They dragged me over and - voila - here I am,” Iris chuckled to WWD.
“It’s been very fun. I like to do things that are fun. If you don’t have fun, what good is it? The clothes are particularly suited to a younger generation but us old geezers can wear it as well.”
The line features “must-have” pieces and oozes the ‘60s Mod glamour that Iris has become known for.
Iris Meets INC will be available in 300 Macy's stores, as well as online from September (16). It’s the company’s latest drive to attract a younger audience, and despite being on the verge of turning 95, Iris has become a fashion icon for a new generation of women.
One of her favourite pieces from the new line is a long-sleeved shirt.
“They’re a blessing for us older gals,” she quipped. “The only thing off-limits are the miniskirts and very sleeveless pieces, which I think expose too much for an older woman. Otherwise, it’s very versatile, all kind of mix-and-match.”
Nancy Slavin, senior vice president of marketing of Macy’s Merchandising Group, describes Iris as “on point” when it comes to style genre, and says the team regarded her as a fashion editor when putting the collection together.
“Iris is about style. She is so charismatic when it comes to fashion,” she praised.
