Hillier and Bartley launching label
Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley are launching their own womenswear line.
The design duo had been at the helm of Marc by Marc Jacobs since 2013, until the line was recently dissolved into the main label.
However, Bartley insists the decision to launch their own brand, Hillier Bartley, had nothing to do with the changes at Marc Jacobs.
“Hillier Bartley is a very personal project which Katie and I have been working on for years. It is a culmination of everything I have learned as a designer and a woman, and is purely and defiantly about the clothes and fabrics," Bartley told WWD. "We have also looked at the women we admire, what we would want to wear and the inspirations that have been close to us for ages.
"Its ultimate heroine lies somewhere between Ian McCulloch and Katharine Hepburn. It’s about a woman our age, indie by heart, rakish and irreverent by nature, who is maturing into refinement and naturalness.”
The pair are working out of a studio in East London and will start supplying designs to retailers from August.
They described the collection as having a "masculine elegance", and as well as a ready-to-wear line they'll also create bags and accessories.
"[We work together] in different ways. Now we are finally putting all our experience into making something that’s a reflection of us, of what we want to wear," Hillier commented.
"I’m really proud of what we’ve made - the craftsmanship, attention to detail and design. It’s been a real labour of love, and I am looking forward to seeing women we admire carrying our bags and wearing our clothes.”
Sources say the designers haven't turned their backs on Marc Jacobs though, with both thought to be involved with new ventures at the label.
