Henry Holland: I hid my sexuality

Henry Holland held back telling his mother he was gay because he thought she'd make him a penis-shaped cake.

The British designer has had a passion for fashion and shopping all his life, making him the perfect candidate to create quirky garments.

Although his parents have always been supportive of his dreams, Henry didn't come out until he was at university when his friends picked up on it.

"Friends would introduce me to boys, and I was like, 'how did you know?' And they were like, 'Please,'" he grinned to Elle UK. "I didn’t tell my mum because I knew she would be so excited about it she would do something mortifying like throw me a party with a penis-shaped cake."

Henry is now settled with his boyfriend of five years, Coach accessories designer David Hodgson.

He also has famous names for friends, including model and actress Agyness Deyn. The pair have been pals since childhood and previously shared a flat in Camden together.

When he started in fashion she became a muse to Henry, but Agyness was just as influenced by him.

"I remember thinking, 'Wow, I’ve never met anyone like you.' He was so carefree and hilariously funny, he was like a new creature to me," Agyness recalled. "When Henry moved to London, I missed him so much I followed him. He would sneak me into his halls of residence and we’d top ’n’ tail in a single bed eating paté on toast and fall asleep watching Friends. Then we lived together for years.

"Both of us were always skint; we’d feast on peas and gravy and make out like it was a roast dinner. But for Henry, if it was a toss up between a fashion mag and food, the mag would always win."
