Emma Hill: 'Choose a versatile colour when bag shopping'

Emma Hill advises bag fans to invest in at least one versatile piece.

The British designer hit headlines when she quit her post at Mulberry in 2013, shocking many with the move. However when she debuted her new line, Hill & Friends, at London Fashion Week in September 2014, Emma proved she was firmly back on the fashion radar.

She’s more than aware that many women turn to simple black carriers when looking for a new bag, but Emma insists all ladies should give colour a go.

“If you’re worried about colour try something versatile, then you can wear it with anything,” she told Australia’s Vogue magazine. “In our collection we have an amazing oxblood colour which works really well with black, navy, camel, denim and white. It’s our best-selling colour, better than black. It’s super chic and somehow cooler than a black bag.

“I’m also a huge fan of leopard which is the unsung neutral hero; it goes with everything - brights, summer or winter palettes - and brings an edge to whatever else you’re wearing.”

When it comes to what bags women should own, an everyday, functional bag is top of Emma’s list. Aside from that a “beautiful bag”, bolder pieces like a clutch and a “tiny bag with a big personality”, are also of utmost importance.

As for caring for expensive purchases, Emma says it's best to always keep them in their dust bags.

“It’s best to keep them in their care bags, always make sure they are clean and dry before you put them away and if you’re not going to use them for a while it’s best to stuff them with tissue first,” she explained. “They should be stored in a cool dry room and out of direct sunlight.”
