Emilia Wickstead: 'Matches is my fashion family'

Emilia Wickstead considers Matches Fashion founders Ruth and Tom Chapman her “fashion parents”.

The London-based designer, who counts Britain’s Duchess of Cambridge, Diane Kruger and Suki Waterhouse among her clientele, has joined forces with Matches to create a capsule collection. The line is full of floral sundresses, pleated cotton skirts and billowed sleeve blouses - all perfect for the warmer months.

“Ruth and Tom have been like my ‘fashion parents’ and very good friends — they were the first to sell my designs,” Emilia smiled to The Hollywood Reporter. “So, I thought that it was fitting to do my first capsule collection with Matches. I had also mentioned in conversation to Ruth that I don’t own any cotton dresses and when I go on holiday I can’t really wear Emilia Wickstead because it’s so hot... that was a perfect reason to create a collection of summery cotton dresses.”

The colour palette consists of reds, burnt oranges and pretty pastels, making it ideal for the summer season.

When asked to describe her customers, the New Zealand-born style star has nothing but love for the Emilia Wickstead woman.

“She’s the most wonderful, intelligent, sophisticated and fun-loving person with lots of personality at the table. She doesn't need the clothes, but when she walks into a room wearing them, she immediately gets noticed,” she beamed.

And that of course includes Emilia’s famous fans, who the designer thinks encapsulates her brand perfectly.

“I’ve dressed so many of my dream clients - Diane was definitely one. I’d probably say Cate Blanchett… that would be another dream come true. Luckily, we’ve been pretty spot on when it comes to dressing actresses that are very much the EW woman,” she smiled.
