Elle Macpherson: 'Feel-good lingerie is my legacy'
Elle Macpherson is determined to revolutionise the lingerie business.
The Australian supermodel parted ways with Bendon-manufactured Elle Macpherson Intimates two years ago, and recently launched Elle Macpherson Body, a new venture she’s running alongside entrepreneur Simon de Winter, while Heidi Klum took over the Intimates range.
With her new company, Elle is looking to reposition the brand into a serious player in the underwear business by offering bras and underwear which are not only practical but look good underneath clothes too.
“I’m not locked into lace land any more, thank goodness,” Elle told The Guardian. “I can make bras that look great under T-shirts and white shirts. Bras that make you feel good, you know? That’s going to be my legacy.”
The 52-year-old adds that each piece is designed to look good from angle, with her T-shirt bras having darts only on the bottom half of the cup in order to create a smooth line. She’s also stuck with a luxurious colour palette, though she reveals she chose tones such as pistachio, teal and ginger for a reason.
“I looked at a lot of fashion for my colour palette – Gucci, Prada – and I found colours which work under clothes. I don’t want my bra to show under my white shirt, but I don’t want to wear a nude bra, so I have a beautiful greenstone colour that disappears under white,” she explained.
Elle says that at the heart of her brand, which is available at major department stores and Net-a-Porter, is a desire to make sexy and sporty lingerie which is also comfortable.
She’s also well aware that a lot has changed in fashion since her modelling heyday.
“The spectrum of beauty has got so much bigger than it was when I started out modelling – women don’t need to fit into anybody’s stereotype any more. We can dress to express ourselves and our personalities,” smiled Elle.
