Dries van Noten to step into spotlight for new documentary
Dries van Noten’s designs and career are to be the subject of a new documentary.
The Belgian fashion designer began his career in 1986, when he presented his first line in London as part of The Antwerp Six collective.
He has since gone on to build a reputation for his uses of prints, colours, original fabrics and layering, and sets himself apart from other designers by refusing to advertise or offer haute couture.
Now the 58-year-old’s work and life will be the focus of a film, titled Dries, being made by writer-director Reiner Holzemer and co-producer Aminata Sambe.
“It took me a very long time to convince Dries to share his passions, his creative and intimate world in front of a camera,” Holzemer said in a statement, according to Variety. “I followed him for a whole year and I think I came as close to him and his world as it is possible. I hope the result is a very personal insight into his life and career.”
The documentary will feature interviews with Dries as he designs four new collections over one year, and will go behind the scenes in his atelier and home to examine the highs and lows of his 25 year career.
Dogwoof Pictures, the company that distributed Dior and I as well as other fashion films like Iris, The First Monday in May, Advanced Style, and Bill Cunningham: New York, has purchased the world sales rights to the flick.
“Reiner’s access to the personal and creative mind of Dries is captivating. Van Noten is one of the most private fashion designers out there and it is a privilege to represent the first film ever made about him, and to witness his creative process,” Ana Vicente, Dogwoof’s theatrical sales chief, said.
Dries is set to be released next year (17).
