Donna Karan to be honoured at CFDA awards

Donna Karan is to be honoured at the upcoming CFDA Fashion Awards.

The New York-born fashion designer is to be given the Founder’s Award at the glitzy ceremony on 6 June (16).

Karan, 67, is the creator of the Donna Karan New York and DKNY clothing labels and is known for her wearable collections, which feature jersey dresses, denim and opaque tights.

The CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) named her the Menswear Designer of the Year 1992 and Womenswear Designer of the Year 1990 and 1996. She was a nominee for the latter again in 2003 and the CFDA presented her with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.

At a gathering on Wednesday evening (16Mar16), CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg and Nadja Swarovski revealed the list of honourees and nominees for the annual ceremony.

The CFDA is a non-for-profit trade association of over 450 prominent American fashion and accessory designers.

The annual awards ceremony honours the top design talent and this year will take place in the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan, a new venue for the occasion, and will be a seated dinner instead of the stadium seating of years past.

The nominees include many familiar names, including Marc Jacobs, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler and Mary-Kate Olsen of The Row for the Womenswear category.

First-time nominees include Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia of Monse, and Brandon Maxwell for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear.

This year, the late singer and fashion icon David Bowie will also be honoured with the Tribute Award at the event, while Gucci's creative director Alessandro Michele will be presented with the International Award.
