Designers revealed for the New York City Ballet's Fall Fashion Gala
Monse’s Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim and Diane von Furstenberg designer Jonathan Saunders are among the creatives teaming up with the New York City Ballet to design its costumes.
Off-White’s Virgil Abloh and Japanese fashion star Tsumori Chisato are also part of the ballet’s sixth Fall Fashion Gala, an event which pairs together top name designers with the famous dance company. Last year the actress recruited Rosie Assoulin, Narciso Rodriguez, Dries Van Noten and Jason Wu to dress the dancers.
Now WWD has revealed which dancers each dressmaker will be paired with; Monse’s design duo with principal dancer Lauren Lovette, Saunders with soloist Troy Schumacher, and Abloh, who will create costumes for a new piece by choreographer Gianna Reisen and Chisato has been paired with the Ballet’s resident choreographer Justin Peck.
This year’s gala will take place on 28 September (17), with the event founder Sarah Jessica Parker back chairing the celebration of fashion and dance.
The Sex and the City style favourite joined the New York City Ballet’s board of directors in 2010, and came up with the idea to pair high-end designers with dancers and choreographers two years later.
“I’ve just found the collaboration very spirited and very good for this company and very good for the designers who’ve joined us and are willing to do this,” Parker told W Magazine after the 2016 gala. “When you work for a cultural institution, you have to keep thinking, ‘What will be meaningful to audiences and what will be deserving of those big ticket prices that we ask? So tomorrow, we’ll have a call and we’ll get to work on 2017 starting tomorrow morning.”
The fall gala is to feature four premieres, choreographed by principal dancer Lauren Lovette, who debuted her first work for the company for the gala last year.
