Consuelo Castiglioni: 'Marni girls break the rules'

Consuelo Castiglioni thinks the Marni woman has a natural sense of elegance, but loves to break the fashion rules.

Consuelo has been at the helm of Marni since launching the label in 1994. With no formal training in style, Consuelo wowed fashion fans from day one and has become synonymous with bold colours and prints.

"I think the woman that likes Marni is independent and coherent to her style, interpreting the clothes and not being overwhelmed by them," she told Matches Fashion. "The Marni woman has a strong character with a natural sense of elegance and femininity, curious to explore fashion. She knows what she wants and breaks the rules."

Unlike many high-end labels, Marni has remained a family business. Consuelo's husband Gianni is the CEO and their daughter Carolina runs the online store, as well as acting as the brand's special projects' director. Consuelo doesn't worry herself with the social media side of things, so Carolina looks after all online platforms.

When it comes to choosing fabrics though, Consuelo is much more hands on. "My choices for the collections often play with contrast; couture fabrics are mixed with utilitarian elements and silhouettes are not overt, hiding often unexpected details," she explained. "This season, the collection was defined by the mix of different textures, from jacquard to heavy wool cloth, and with finishing, from raw hems to embroidered cut-out felt and velvet decors. This was all to express the idea of raw preciousness.

"The A/W15 collection was inspired by this modern heroine with confidence and self-assurance - a fierce wanderer."
