Cindy Crawford: I wasn’t jealous of the supers
Cindy Crawford has hinted there was intense rivalry between the original supermodels, even though she was never envious of them.
The 49-year-old star hit the fashion bigtime in the 80s, around the time other big names like Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista were working. They became known as the original supermodels and although they were friends, each had a keen eye on what the others were doing.
“Some of it is just normal and healthy and then sometimes it would get, you know,” Cindy told The Cut. “There were probably some - I mean, I never really got into it with anybody. I never was jealous of other people. I would say I was maybe envious like, ‘Oh, I wish I could have done that shoot that Christy (Turlington) did with Steven Meisel. I love the styling. I love the hair and make-up,’ but it wasn't like (I wanted to) sabotage her.”
Part of that was probably because of Cindy’s upbringing in the mid-West. When she moved to New York City to pursue modelling she was blown away by all the things she didn’t know – for example she’d never had a bagel before. She also wasn’t used to how forthright people were and didn’t know how to present herself.
As she worked that changed and it’s one of the reasons why she is so careful now her daughter 14-year-old daughter Kaia has embarked on a modelling career.
“Who does Kaia look up to? The Gigis (Hadid, model),” she said. “So she thinks, ‘I should have a green juice before school,’ I'm like, ‘Kaia, you need food. You're going to school all day. You need to eat something.’ I try to teach Kaia by, at least on the outside, having a healthy relationship with my own body. I don't want her to hear me putting myself down. I don't want her to think that part of being a woman is being deprived."
