Christopher Kane: I want my sneakers to surprise
Christopher Kane has designed his first sneaker collection.
The British designer is one of the biggest names on London's fashion scene, and his September (15) London Fashion Week Show attracted the likes of Amber and Yasmin Le Bon. His design talents were also sought out by Downton Abbey star Laura Carmichael at the Burn Burn Burn screening last week (beg12Oct15) in the British capital.
However, Christopher has recently turned his attention to athletic footwear, with three styles that will be sold exclusive on Net-A-Porter and Mr Porter. The looks each feature the designer's signature elastic strap and safety buckle.
“I get bored very easily, so I like to change and surprise with my collections," Christopher divulged to Vogue Australia. “My influences for the trainers were function mixed with a strong Christopher Kane ID and signature. I wanted to create a classic shape that was modern without retro-isms and that can be worn by everyone.”
Sneaker fans will be able to get their hands on a pair for one month only from late October (15). The shoes were made in Italy from neoprene, with the designs inspired from Christopher's Resort 16 and Spring/Summer 16 collections. Colours include a black pair with a neon yellow strap and muted tones of light blue and taupe with black straps for the other two styles.
“My trainer has the right balance of fashion and sportiness that are easy to pull on with jeans or an evening gown if you like!" Christopher smiled. "They work both ways, and I wanted that freedom.”
The trainers are only the tip of the iceberg for the British designer right now, and his namesake label is busy expanding into new retail space and the online world.
“There is so much going on right now," he explained. "I have just opened my first store on Mount Street (in London) and have recently launched our own website with a view to open e-com soon.”
