Christopher Kane: I'd never launch lace up sneakers!

Christopher Kane would never launch a pair of lace up sneakers, preferring to create a twist on the classic kids' Velcro.

The Scottish designer has become a fashion favourite since launching his eponymous label alongside his sister Tammy in 2006. Adding another string to his stylish bow, Christopher has launched a range of footwear available for one month only exclusively for Net-A-Porter and Mr Porter. There's three styles on offer, with all boasting one similar feature.

"I wanted something classic and cool in style with a slight twist on the usual fastening," he told Britain's The Telegraph newspaper. "I was never going to launch with a lace up! I love the easiness to it; it's like an adult version of a Velcro kids’ sneaker. The best thing about them is that they are actually comfortable... and of course look good!"

Christopher has dreamed of designing sneakers for some time and used his Spring/Summer 07 line - his first ever collection - for inspiration. It was the use of a safety buckle and stretch elastic which he drew upon and often uses these elements as he feels they make "perfect sense" in his pieces. The star is confident people's entire appearance changes thanks to wearing a pair of trainers and is glad his hard work paid off with the finished range.

"If you pull on sneakers you are doing it for comfort and to have a nonchalant feeling about your look, or even better you are not thinking too much about how you look and it becomes natural," he added.

"I have to say making a sneaker is a very long process, the lead times for moulds are insane and you need so many materials and there are so many possibilities! We've created our very own safety buckle mould in Italy so it’s not just an everyday buckle you can find in a supplier catalogue."

The footwear is available now.
