Christian Louboutin: 'The sneaker has something sexy about it'

Christian Louboutin considers the sneaker to be the "high heel for men".

The French footwear designer is known for his vertiginous heels with red shiny soles, favoured by women worldwide. But when it comes to casual options, Louboutin is somewhat lacking, so turned to his friend and athlete Henri Tai to collaborate on a capsule collection of sneakers.

“I think the sneaker, strangely enough, is like the high heel of men,” Louboutin told WWD. “It has something quite sexy, you can wear it anywhere just like a good pair of high heels for women. It can be worn in formalwear or in an incredibly relaxed way.”

While Louboutin has teamed up with other names in the past, such as Rodarte, those opportunities revolved around solely his designs. This sneaker collaboration with Tai marks the first time Louboutin has collaborated with somebody else in a design perspective.

“It’s because Henri is a very inspiring sportsman,” Louboutin explained of working with founder Tai. “His site is quite a unique site for men’s sports. He’s been a great translator about sports for me - if I go to a match he opens my eyes (about what’s going on).”

The line contains high and low-top style sneakers, mostly white with accents of bright turquoise, along with a black and turquoise motif and a print of the Sporty Henri logo.

Getting your hands on these limited edition sneakers, which range in price from $895 (£672) to $1,195 (£897), is going to be tough though as they have been produced in a run of just 600.

Handball player Tai also found the chance to work with Louboutin a unique experience, adding to WWD: "I’m so happy to do this with Christian. It’s really important to be different and create something new in sports, and it’s important for me to find different designs to create an identity for my web site."

The sneakers go on sale on Wednesday (14Sep16) in select Louboutin men's boutiques and on
