Christian Louboutin's 'silly' suggestions for watch design

Christian Louboutin is grateful to Jaeger-LeCoultre for being patient during his "silly" proposals.

The famed footwear designer has turned his hand to watches by collaborating on a unique version of the Swiss brand's Reverso design. Louboutin is known for his signature red soles, but they don't feature on the accessory, and deciding which of his personal touches to apply was quite the challenge.

“They were very patient, even with some silly proposals I put forward, explaining what could work if simplified, and what was impossible,” he told Britain's The Telegraph newspaper. “It was a real collaboration of respect, with ideas going back and forth until we truly understood each other.

“I found parallels between making shoes and watches. Both contain hidden engineering that in a shoe has to carry weight and give the right centre of gravity for balance, and in a watch makes it keep accurate time, which is far more technical."

He turned his attention to the detail of the dial colour, using materials like pave diamonds. There will be seven dials and seven wristbands available in Jaeger-LeCoultre boutiques from spring (16).

Quizzed on whether watches can be as sexy as shoes and make the wrist an object of fascination, Louboutin replied with a mischievous grin that women can use a flick of the wrist to make sensuous gestures. “The difference is that a watch is only on one wrist and most women use the other one to make gestures, which is where the sensuality comes from, but the details of dial and strap are designed to enhance this,” he added. “The point is that, as is the case with my shoes, desire is irrational but the pleasure it brings is definitely needed.”

If the watches are to be a hit, they're sure to draw in famous fans as Louboutin's footwear is worn by the likes of Charlize Theron, Naomi Campbell and Gwen Stefani.
