Charlotte Olympia launches Barbie doll
Charlotte Olympia designer Charlotte Dellal has created her very own Barbie doll.
The London-based footwear designer has previously joined forces with Agent Provocateur and MAC Cosmetics, but her latest venture has seen Charlotte indulge her inner child. The shoe label will launch the doll with a video campaign on Tuesday (06Sep16), along with Barbie inspired shoes and bags.
Talking about the project, Charlotte admits this has been her favourite collaboration to date.
“It was the inner child in me. Who hasn’t dreamt of having a Barbie that looks like you? You want one you can relate to,” she smiled to WWD.
To reflect her own personal tastes, Charlotte’s Barbie wears an outfit based on a Giambattista Valli creation the designer owns. The mini me also owns a hoard of Charlotte Olympia-inspired accessories, including Kitty flats, Eve platform pumps, the banana bag and the label’s Perspex clutch.
“I wanted people to see the Barbie and instantly know she was a Charlotte Olympia doll,” Charlotte explained. “Barbie was more complete when she had her accessories. I think it adds to the charm of the doll when things are made miniature.”
Charlotte approached Barbie maker Mattel to get the project off the ground, and visited the toy brand’s headquarters in California, where she was surprised to learn how much detail goes into the doll’s accessories.
As for her own approach to designing the toy, Charlotte admits she embraced Barbie’s retro past, which was in keeping with her own vintage aesthetic.
“I didn’t want to modernise her because I went to the era, the ‘50s, that inspires my brand. I definitely went backwards,” she shared.
