Chanel Iman: 'Jourdan and I were competitive... now we're like sisters'

Chanel Iman is extremely close to Jourdan Dunn now but that wasn't always the case.

A veteran of the Victoria's Secret runway, Chanel started modelling with Ford Models at the age of 12 as a child model in Los Angeles, California, and made her debut on the cover of Teen Vogue in 2007 with Karlie Kloss, and Jourdan in 2009.

The stunning 25-year-old model was a guest at the star-studded Revolve Summer Party in New York's the Hamptons, which was also attended by Kim Kardashian, and looked stylish in a timeless sleek fretwork X by Nbd maxi dress. Chanel shared that she was happy to support the fashion brand, with whom she has worked with previously and praises for its "Girl Power" get-togethers.

However, she admits it has been a struggle at times to feel the sisterly solidarity, especially as a black model, because often they are fighting for that one spot on the catwalk or an editorial job.

During a chat with Teen Vogue the model discussed her relationship with British model Jourdan, revealing that it wasn't always the sisterly affection they have for each other now.

"Shooting with Jourdan, it was just such a powerful cover because we were both, at the time, on top of our game. And we still are, but we were really at the highest of our careers as black girls," she gushed. "I always like to look at magazines with girls that I could relate to, and to do a cover like that, it was a moment for both of us."

And one she could enjoy, as she explained how originally, people in the industry tried to pit the pair against each other when they first entered the fashion game.

"When we were first starting out, Jourdan and I were both the same age, so people were always trying to make us compete against each other. But we realised as we got older, that brought us closer. Now we're the most supportive of each other — we're like sisters," Chanel shared.

Chanel is now working on dominating in another area - acting. She appeared in the 2015 film Dope playing the role of Lily, alongside her former beau, rapper A$AP Rocky.

"I'm very grateful for anything that comes my way, but in the meantime, I just focus on being the best that I can be as a person and as an actress. I work on my talent every day with my acting coaches, and hopefully something will come through," she added.
