Carine Roitfeld: You can't learn chic
Carine Roitfeld says being chic is something people have inside of them.
The former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris and founder of CR Fashion Book has taken part in a series for Mytheresa.com, involving a filmed interview and written profile.
In a clip from her recording, Carine discusses how one would go about impressing in the style stakes.
“When I was a little girl, fashion was not important as it was today. How can you be chic? You don’t learn to be chic. You learn to avoid errors. To be chic, it’s something you have inside," she advised. "Clothes are very important. It can change your life. It can change how you feel that day. You can be nicer because you feel more beautiful. But the person is more important than what she is wearing.”
She also spoke about her own taste in clothing, dubbing her approach as picky. Luckily her friend and fashion icon Tom Ford provides her with plenty of pieces which Carine loves to wear. She worked as a consultant for him during his time at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, as well as modelling for his Black Orchid fragrance in 2006.
"He told me, ‘Each ten years you have to go back to your wardrobe and you have to edit.’ The secret of a woman is to wear what is good for her," she recalled. "If I have a great décolleté, I will wear a very low v-neck. If I have beautiful hair, I will play with my hair. I prefer to take off something than to add something. I am very simple.”
Other stars appearing in the Mytheresa series include Victoria Beckham, Alexa Chung and Diane Kruger.
