Betsey Johnson's yard sale bargains

Betsey Johnson found it fun to throw a yard sale ahead of her move.

The 73-year-old designer is relocating from East Hampton, New York to Malibu in order to be closer to her family.

Known for her kooky and colourful designs, it's no surprise fashion fans were quick to jump at the chance to nab pieces from her personal collection. Betsey threw a three-day yard sale on Grape Arbor Lane made up of around 10,000 garments, from vintage couture to runway pieces.

“After I realised I have all this stuff, I thought it would be fun to have a yard sale," she told New York Post's Page Six. “I feel I have everything I need. I’m over it! I’m good.”

Betsey's friend Mark Vitulano helped organise the event, which wrapped up yesterday. One item which sold was a Jean Paul Gaultier tulle coat, which retails at $3,000 and was purchased for $150.

The platinum blonde designer has been recognised countless times in the industry, such as when she received the lifetime achievement from the CFDA earlier this year. She was honoured with Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award and cartwheeled on stage for her acceptance speech.

After the event she spoke about how grateful she is to have her work respected by fellow fashion stars.

"It’s a great honour. Because I never really played ball with the industry that much," she explained to "I never wined and dined and, you know, I really did my own thing. And it’s great to feel the respect from the serious industry. Respect, for such a frivolous funky crazy silly kid. But I lasted!"
