Balmain Resort line influenced by '70s glamazons

Balmain’s Resort 2017 collection merged relaxed silhouettes with ’70-style glamour.

Unveiling the line on Thursday (30Jun16), Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing explained that when coming up with a theme for the range he was inspired by exotic locales and the confident style of legendary '70s models.

"Balmain’s 2017 Resort's strong injections of colour were initially inspired by thoughts of exotic beaches and the intense shades of the sea, sky and sand in those faraway lands," he captioned an image of models wearing the new collection posted on Balmain’s Instagram page. "I was inspired by the incredible legacy of (fashion photographer) Guy Bourdin and the bold spirit of the best ‘70s fashion editorials. The collection’s silhouette, both relaxed and body-conscious, riffs on the uniquely sensual and confident style of legendary ‘70s fashion icons - Bianca (Jagger), Iman, Lauren (Hutton) and Verushka (sic)."

Showing that he knows sexy doesn’t just mean tight body-conscious dresses, the collection featured an olive green crepe pantsuit with billowing flared trousers, off-the-shoulder ruffled dresses, and disco-style jumpsuits with shoulder cutouts and slits at the leg. Models also stepped out in patchwork silk ponchos, a cobalt blue column ruffle dress matched with a wide belt, beaded minidresses and a fuchsia jacket with shoulder cutouts that ties like a Japanese kimono.

The beach theme was also evident in flowing light-weight skirts and trousers which showed the influence of the pareo, a type of wraparound skirt worn in the Cook Islands. Rousteing stepped up the glam factor with a filter of sunset-inspired hues, with multicoloured crochet, haute-hippie macrame minis, electric tweeds, striated beading and vibrant woven knitwear showing that a rainbow of colour doesn't have to be psychedelic. The luxury element of the line was played up with styling of the models, who were bronzed and glowing, with a golden eyeshadow dusted over the lids and swipe of deep red on the lips.
