Balenciaga appoints new CEO amidst creative overhaul
Balenciaga has appointed Cedric Charbit as its new chief executive officer.
Kering, the parent company of the French fashion house, has confirmed Charbit’s new role, which will come into effect from 28 November (16).
He succeeds long-time Balenciaga chief Isabelle Guichot, who will take on new responsibilities within Paris-based Kering, the luxury conglomerate which also counts Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen and Brioni amongst its brands.
Charbit will report to Francois-Henri Pinault, chairman and CEO of Kering, and joins the company after working as an executive at Saint Laurent, where he oversaw product development and marketing.
He previously was deputy GM at Emilio Pucci, and held management roles in retail - as general merchandise manager for womenswear at Harrods in London and Printemps in Paris.
At Balenciaga, Charbit will be tasked with accelerating the brand’s international growth, Kering said in a statement.
The change in CEO marks a new phase for the brand, which was founded by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1919 and acquired by Kering in 2001. Balenciaga is currently in the midst of a creative overhaul under Vetements founder Demna Gvasalia, who took over last year (15) from Alexander Wang as the firm’s creative head.
Gvasalia has brought in strong shoulders, hooded sweatshirts and quirky leather goods to Balenciaga, propelling a new vibe at the couture label.
Charbit’s appointment is the latest addition in the current wave of management turnover happening in the fashion industry, with Kering selecting Hugo Boss chief Claus-Dietrich Lars to helm of Bottega Veneta last month (Sep16) and Versace tapping Jonathan Akeroyd as its new CEO, who joined from Alexander McQueen.
