Azzedine Alaia presents sleek show in Paris

Azzedine Alaia has focused on fabulous outerwear and his signature knit dresses in his latest collection.

The designer hosted a fashion show at his Rue de Moussy headquarters in Paris for ready-to-wear fall 2016 on Sunday afternoon (03Apr16), with a front row which boasted the likes of actress Monica Bellucci and Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere.

Famed for his body-conscious dresses and flaring skirts, Alaia wowed the audience with a range of coats in glossy leathers or striking jacquards. A-line coats had swaying, voluminous detail at the back, with some interestingly harnessed with a belt placed at the level of the bra strap.

Of course there were many of his signature knitwear dresses, the show opening with sleeveless looks that boasted deep armholes and rows of colourful dots. The designer also let loose with sequins, embedding them in details of his knitted dresses or using them in graphic lines in his black gowns with asymmetric hems.

The Tunisian-born couturier also shows sleek tuxedos and revealing lace gowns, such as black lace dress with sheer panels through the skirt, showing more than a hint of skin, though his tailcoat boleros, the fronts framing the rib cage, really stood out.

He also experimented with texture and architectural shape, with bubble-shaped white fur shirts styled with paisley patterned long-sleeved shirts, pairing them with ankle-length black leather biker boots.

Unlike other designers who have adopted more immediacy with see-now, shop-now fashion shows, Alaia, 76, is clearly not taking that route.

"I took the time necessary to create them," he shrugged to WWD after the show, as guests flocked to congratulate him.

Longtime brand fan, model Natalia Vodianova, who is pregnant with her fifth child, positively glowed in a bright blue Alaia sweater vest which stretched over her belly, at the show.
