Ashley Graham rolls eyes at Cheryl Tiegs' comments
Plus-size beauty Ashley Graham's skin is thick enough to shrug off Cheryl Tiegs' negative comments.
Former model Cheryl hit headlines last month (Feb16) when she commented on the new Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover, which features Ashley on a beach.
Tiegs felt the idea of putting a plus-size model on the cover promoted an unhealthy body image.
Her remarks upset so many people that Tiegs felt the need to apologise, but Ashley hasn't let the criticism get to her. In fact, she's using the controversy as an opportunity to change minds.
"Cheryl Tiegs may have said what she said and it may have hurt a lot of people's feelings," she told E! News, "but my skin is so thick. I kind of rolled my eyes. I was like, 'Oh whatever, another one of these ladies'. But what's great is that - the fact that she said it - it means that other women think like her. And what that means is that we really need to change the industry.
"There are too many people thinking they can look at a girl my size and say that we are unhealthy. You can't, only my doctor can!"
Although Cheryl was quick to clear up her comments, also listing anorexia and bulimia as being detrimental to a person's health, Ashley isn't accepting that as a proper apology. Cheryl may have aimed her statements at curvaceous Ashley, but the cover girl has revealed Tiegs hasn't personally reached out to her to make amends.
"People are saying she apologised but I never heard one," Ashley noted, while considering what she would say if she ran into Cheryl, a former Sports Illustrated beauty.
"You never know, and I will go up to her and say hello, and all the SI girls, I've always looked up to them," she mused. "They are classic, amazing, beautiful women and it's a shame that we have to bring other people down, but that's why I'm here. I've got to bring other women up."
