Anthony Vaccarello shows off first designs for Saint Laurent

Anja Rubik stars in Anthony Vaccarello’s first campaign for Saint Laurent.

Vaccarello was named as French fashion house Saint Laurent’s creative director in April (16), succeeding Hedi Slimane in the prestigious role. He put his namesake label on hold so he could fully focus on his new role, and will show his first collection as part of Paris Fashion Week on 27 September, the first day of the biannual event.

In the shots, shared exclusively with WWD, Polish beauty Anja shows off the opulent designs, posing in the French capital for photographers Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. One striking look sees the model wearing a plunging, embroidered bodysuit and a denim blouson. The pieces are from Saint Laurent’s Spring 17 line. A video has also been produced.

The black and white shots will drop in the October issues of magazines, and an outdoor campaign will begin in New York on Saturday (17Sep16).

The brand describes Rubik as “the face of the new Saint Laurent woman,” adding she portrays “a free, hedonist and elusive woman, captured in the early hours of the morning on the wharfs of the Seine.”

The label continues to sum up her wardrobe as: “juxtaposing leather, jewels and lace, drawing a femininity without frills, rooted in paradoxes, a sensuality tied to the body.”

Vaccarello and Rubik have long since been fans of each other’s work, and after Vaccarello was announced as the new Saint Laurent designer, the model commented: “I think Saint Laurent will become more Anthony Vaccarello — very cool but very chic. I think there will be a new wave of elegance.”

She also told WWD: “I call it intelligent fashion because every single detail, including the way the clothes fall, is done by design. It’s quite sharp, and there’s a touch of masculinity in his designs. There’s this sexiness in the way he interprets masculinity for women.”
