Alexander Wang presenting fashion gong
Alexander Wang is to present a top fashion award in New York City in November (15).
The former creative director of Balenciaga will be on hand to give out a prize at the Accessories Council’s 2015 ACE Awards on 2 November (15), honouring costume designer Paolo Nieddu and actress Taraji P. Henson with the Influencer gong.
The event is being held at Cipriani and is set to be a lavish, black tie affair.
Some of those who will be handed prizes have been confirmed, with John Varvatos to be named designer of the year and Ivanka Trump getting the breakthrough prize.
The awards were first staged in 1997 and the idea behind them is to honour those who have promoted accessories over the last year. Previous winners include Kerry Washington and Proenza Schouler.
Opting to invite Wang to present an accolade comes as little surprise, as he has rarely been out of the fashion headlines of late. In July (15) weeks of speculation came to an end when he confirmed he was parting ways with Balenciaga, with his Spring/Summer 16 presentation at Paris Fashion Week in September (15) his last.
He also has a strong link to accessories, previously explaining they are what he focuses on first and foremost when creating a new line.
"Every season, accessories are usually the first to be designed. Function and ease are important elements,” he told WWD in July (15). “However, for fall, eccentricity was definitely on my mind. I explored the aesthetics of certain subcultures, specifically the hard-edge sensibility of Goth and heavy metal, both playing a literal and abstract role.”
This love of additional items won him a nomination for a CFDA Award in the Accessory Designer of the Year category this year. He faced stiff competition from the likes of Irene Neuwirth, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler, Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen for The Row and Tabitha Simmons, with Simmons eventually triumphing.
