2016 Met Gala theme revealed
Next year's (2016) Met Gala's theme will be Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.
The annual event takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and each year sees a different dress code. Stars flooded to the red carpet in oriental-style pieces in May (15) in keeping with the China: Through the Looking Glass subject.
The upcoming occasion will focus on how handmade haute couture and machine-made clothing work together in harmony. Andrew Bolton, curator of the event, has explained how the decision came about.
“Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made,” he told vogue.com. “But recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other.”
Guests will feast their eyes upon over 100 ready-to-wear and haute couture garments, with some of the second featuring technical qualities such as embroidery, lacework and pleating. These will be compared to machine-made items that demonstrate circular knotting, laser cutting and thermo shaping.
Those attending will be able to see how certain pieces are made thanks to 'in process' workshops, giving a glimpse at skills such as 3D printing.
It has been confirmed that the 2016 Met Gala will take place in the Big Apple on Monday the 2nd of May, and some big names have been announced as co-chairs. Celebrities Taylor Swift and Idris Elba have won the roles, as have fashion journalist Anna Wintour and designer Jonathan Ive. Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld and Miuccia Prada are to serve as honorary chairs at the 'do, with the accompanying exhibition being sponsored by tech giant Apple.
