Tried and tested: Romantic red

Red nail polish and lipstick should be a make-up bag staple for any discerning beauty fan. But if there was ever a time to try a bold red look it has to be Valentine’s Day. Here are a few of our favourite romantic reds you should be wearing all Valentines week.

MAC Matte Lipstick in Chili – 3.5/5

This has been a catwalk staple for numerous Fashion Week seasons, and it’s easy to see why. The perfect shade – brownish orange-red - for ladies who want red, but not really red. The lipstick is long-lasting (of course, it’s MAC!) and spreads on evenly and easily. The matte finish only worked when my lips were really moisturised though, and ended up making my pout look dry if my lips weren’t in peak condition.

Jane Iredale PureMoist Lipstick in Margi – 5/5

Finding a true red without too much of a blue base can be a mission. But thankfully, Jane Iredale’s PureMoist Lipstick in Margi offers up a vivid pigment with a warm tone, which falls somewhere between a clay red and a fire engine shade. This lipstick has a cream matte feel, and features a softening blend of nourishing natural oils and superfruit extracts for petal‐soft lips! The sleek tube is designed for easy and precise application and the product can be applied without a lip brush. It also has great staying power, and doesn’t fade after sipping on water or hot drinks.

Essie Gel Couture Nail Colour 270 Rock the Runway - 4/5

This vivid scarlet shade certainly oozes glamour and the bottle itself has a quirky finish too. It applies nicely, dries quickly and has lasted on my toes flawlessly for just under a week - I'm impressed! With the whole line reflecting tones seen in couture lines, Essie has perfectly captured the romantic red with Rock the Runway.
