Tried and Tested: Plum nails

For fancy fingertips, why not give a plum nail varnish a whirl? With so many varieties on offer, from deep shades to lighter finishes, there's something for all occasions. Here's a roundup of some of the options available for you to try now.

Essence Gel Nail Polish in Plum - 2.5/5

This varnish is easy to apply and gives a lovely shiny finish. The colour is vivid but not too bold, so makes the perfect shade for everyday occasions. Sadly, the polish began to chip after just a day and a half - despite a good layer of topcoat and drying drops to help seal in the moisture! I was quite disappointed as I really did like the plum colour, but my fingertips looked too messy to keep it on once it cracked.

Smith & Cult in Lovers Creep - 3/5

The packaging of this new brand of nail polish is exquisite - a chunky lid and thick glass bottle mean it feels like a real treat. This shade is a deep red which is perfect for Autumn/Winter 15 and it dries quickly, which is a bonus. I did find the varnish a little streaky though; you definitely need two coats and a third wouldn't go amiss. I got two days' chip-free wear out of it, with some small snags appearing on day three.

SOIGNÉ Nails in Séduisant - 5/5

I absolutely love this nail polish. From the consistency to the colour, it makes a gorgeous addition to my dressing table for winter. I also think the simple, chic packaging is extremely classy and helps it stand out as a high-end product. I used a basecoat to stop staining (it's a very deep plum), then two coats. Even without a topcoat it lasted three days - impressive! Also love that the formula is 85 per cent plant sources and contains no carcinogens.
