Tried and tested: New season bases

When the seasons change there's always an influx of new base products vying for your attention. But which one to choose? Will a cushion foundation suit you, or should you stick to tinted moisturiser? Here we test some of the newest kids on the block.

Lancôme Miracle Cushion Foundation - 4/5

Cushion bases are the latest craze from South Korea, where they've been doing big business for years. They are a thin tint, which would be tricky to apply were it not for the compact they come in - the foundation is in the base and seeps out from a sponge cushioned on top of it. There's an applicator included and the whole process is less messy than it sounds. I liked this; it's a light base which is moisturising and barely there. It goes on quickly and looks natural, but while that's a plus for me, it won't be for those who need more coverage.

bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream - 5/5

This isn't a foundation, BB, CC or tinted moisturiser; it's all three. It's for women who want a natural-looking base with skincare benefits - it has SPF30 and improves your skin's hydration levels. You can apply with a brush but I popped it on with my fingers. It's quick and easy and I'm a total convert; it blurs pores and imperfections but doesn't look cakey and is ideal for my dry skin. Oiler types might find it a little too much though.

Laura Mercier Silk Crème Moisturizing Photo Edition Foundation - 4/5

A little goes a long way with this silky smooth foundation. I found applying some to my fingertip and then blending was the perfect way to achieve a lovely, dewy complexion with enough coverage for redness and spots. Its moisturising nature also keeps things really fresh-looking when applying. My only gripe is pretty skin specific: I have a few dry patches and by the end of the day, the foundation was a little cakey in these areas. But overall, this is a lovely, natural-looking base.

KIKO CC Cream Cushion System - 4/5

I was really dubious about the cushion system- how can this little sponge supply the same amount of foundation as a bottle?! Surly this is only one application's worth? But my worries were unfounded. I have used this numerous times, and it shows no signs of running out. The foundation is lightweight and easy to apply, leaving skin looking dewy with a healthy glow. It has great staying power too. If you're after a heavier look or more cover, then this will be too sheer for you. A great daytime choice.
