Tried and tested: Natural products
Many of us are concerned about the amount of unnecessary chemicals we're coating our body in, given our love for make-up and beauty products. With that in mind we've tried some of the main players from the world of natural beauty, to see how they stack up.
Repcillin Crocodile Oil Balm High Concentrate - 3.5/5
This balm-to-oil formula is derived from pure crocodile oil (from crocodile fat) and can be used to soothe a whole host of skin concerns. Many users report it works well on eczema and sun/wind burn, but I wasn't suffering from any of these when I tried it. Instead I used the product as a moisturiser, and found it really gave my skin a moisture hit that lasted until I woke up. The tub said it's fast absorbing but I didn't find this to be the case, which led me to use it at night only. It smells as you'd expect, quite bland, but that's expected as it's a natural product. At first my skin broke out slightly when using the balm, but it calmed down after the first few applications. I'm looking forward to trying with an actual skin complaint.
Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief Face Cleanser - 4/5
Every now and then it's a treat to use a cleanser rather than a make-up removing wipe. When I read about one with 'mushroom' in the name I was understandably sceptical, but after using it and being left with smooth, soft skin, I've been converted. Free from chemicals, this cleanser got rid of all my make-up without leaving my skin red. My skin has been feeling especially dry recently so I was pleased I felt hydrated afterwards rather than even more dried out.
Mavala Nail Polish - 3/5
Mavala touts itself as one of the leading natural nail care brands around because its products are free from parabens, formaldehydes, toluene, camphore, cellophane, animal ingredients and heavy metal. That doesn't mean the polishes scrimp on style though, as there is a huge range of fashion colours, metallics and glitters available. They need two coats for complete coverage and dry pretty quickly - not super fast, but not the worst either. The bottles are small, but at least that means they are easy to cart around.
