Tried and tested: day creams

Day creams, night creams, serums, oils… skincare is such a minefield for the women and men of today. In the quest to hold off aging, or at the least slow it down, we’re now spending more money than ever on face products. But what should we be putting on first thing? We check out the top face creams doing the rounds.

REN Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream - 4/5

Live in a big city? There is now a wide range of anti-ageing moisturisers on the market which are formulated for sensitive skin and complexions that are affected by everyday stressors like dust and pollution. But REN's day cream has to be the best anti-pollution moisturises I've tried to date, with the formula including a unique array of ingredients, from seaweed to Arctic cranberry seed. Moisturise around a pea-sized amount into the face and neck after cleansing, focusing on the dry spots. The formula makes skin feel soft and soothed, and though it does soak in quickly, it does leave behind a hint of scent.

Dermalogica Active Moist – 5/5

While I like to use anti-aging lotions and potions at night, I’m under 30 so am yet to load up on them in the day. Instead I prefer to use a vitamin C concentrate and a light moisturiser in the morning. Dermalogica’s Active Moist is one of the best moisturisers I’ve ever used, and goes on lightly absorbing almost immediately. A little goes a long way, and this cream acts as a great base to put make-up on. I started using Active Moist during a very dry skin stage, but continued after my skin returned to its normal state and love it just as much.

Nivea Soft Moisture Cream Pot - 3.5/5

This cream should be applied when you don't have to worry about getting any on your hair, because that happening is almost impossible to avoid. A small scoop is enough to cover your whole face and while it takes some time to sink in, it's totally worth it as it leaves your skin feeling smooth and hydrated. Perhaps not best for those in a hurry in the morning as you won't be able to apply make-up soon after, but it certainly makes a good lazy lie in treat at the weekend.
