Trend to try: Red eyeshadow

When it comes to making a statement in the festive season, it’s hard to go past a great red dress or bold red lip.

But have you thought about wearing it on your eyes? While red used to fall victim to outdated beauty rules, the hue has made a resurgence on the red carpet of late with the likes of Stella Maxwell, Jennifer Lopez, Lupita Nyong’o and Selena Gomez all giving it a whirl.

If you’re making your first foray into the red zone, it’s best to try out a shade with a cooler base, like a burgundy or cranberry.

Make Up For Ever’s Artist Shadow in Raspberry, is a dark pink-red with a satiny finish, or try M.A.C.’s Eye Shadow in I’m Into It, a dark red-brown with a matte look. If the red looks a lot brighter on your skin than it does in the palette, you can always blend in a touch of bronze or brown shadow on the edges to tone the shade down a little.

When playing with rich reds, it’s a good idea to keep the rest of your make-up on the safe side, simply opting for blush, a little eyeliner and neutral lipstick. If you’re up for a strong red look, take Illamasqua’s Powder Eye Shadow in Daemon, a bright scarlet, and apply with an angled liner brush and smooth into a graphic cat eye or dash along the crease of the lid.

And if you prefer to experiment with red eyeliner, that’s totally possible too. Swipe a strong colour, such as Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Eye Pencil in Burgundy Suede or NYX Professional Makeup Vivid Brights Eyeliner in Fire across the waterline and be sure to concentrate the ink in just one area. Also be sure to use a clear, bold hue as anything too wishy-washy may make you look like you have a case of hay fever!
