Top trend: Yellow nails

Yellow nails may not sound very appealing. But we’re not talking about discoloured smoker’s nails here – we mean bold and bright and perfect for keeping that summer holiday vibe alive!

There are many reasons why the colour looks so good on your fingertips. For starters, it really helps to bring out a tan. A vibrant yellow polish contrasts beautifully with dark skin, meaning you can still wear it long after the holiday’s over.

It’s also a great way of adding some fun to a plain ensemble. Our favourite ways to wear yellow polish are with a classic LBD or to contrast with a pastel or duck-egg blue outfit.

The way you go about picking your colour is entirely up to you. If you’re after a neon, we like NYC In a New York Colour Minute Nail Polish in Lexington Yellow.

For sunshine yellow, try O.P.I.’s I Just Can’t Cope-acabana polish – it’s one of the best for making your tan pop. Or for a budget version, there's Barry M's Speedy Quick Dry in On Your Marks.

Pastel yellow is a great way to ease yourself into the trend. Our favourites are Butter London's Jasper and Essie Chillato, which has a hint of green in it. Pastels also work well for fairer skin tones that might be washed out by a very bold shade.

When applying yellow polish, it’s particularly important to wear a basecoat. That’s because most varnishes will leave a slight hint on unprotected nails and washed-out yellow is not a great look to go for! Try Butter London Nail Foundation basecoat.

If you’re not keen on trying entirely yellow nails, why not build the colour into a design? Pale yellow looks great as an ombre wash with other pastels. Or you could start with a white base, then add an Aztec or leopard-print design with yellow accent. Finish things off with a clear topcoat like Formula X Shine.
