Top tips to keep matte lipstick looking fresh
When it comes to a statement-making pout, matte lipstick is all the rage. With a velvety finish and long-lasting wear, matte lipsticks can really pull together a look. So, what’s not too love? Matte lipsticks can dry out lips or draw attention to chaps or bumps, particularly when the weather is cold. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to forget about flakes and show off a pout that’s fresher than Kylie Jenner’s.
Often people underestimate how important it is to exfoliate your lips before applying lipstick. Even if your lips look smooth, there’s usually dead skin that needs to be gently scrubbed off. Try dabbing on a little Bliss Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub to gently polish away dry flakes. And if you don’t have a specific lip exfoliator on hand, make do by applying a little Vaseline on the lips before gently buffing with a soft toothbrush before rinsing off.
Though it may seem counterintuitive to the idea of wearing matte lipstick, it’s also very important to moisturise your lips to guarantee a smooth finish. Apply a thin layer of your favourite lip balm, ensuring your let it absorb in for a few minutes, before putting on a little lip primer directly to your pout to keep your matte lip colour from bleeding and to aid in terms of staying power.
If you don’t have lip primer specifically, apply a drop of regular face primer to a brush and apply to the edges of your pout.
Now to the most important step – lip liner. Line your natural lip line using either a neutral colour or a shade which closely matches your lipstick. While it may be tempting to line outside your lips for a fuller effect, you’ll most likely get an unnatural look (trust us!). Proceed to fill in your lips with the lip liner as this will create a canvas for your matte colour to sit on, ensuring your lipstick will stay put through drinks and dinner.
Then to the fun part! After all of those steps you can finally apply your colour. For beginners, Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in shade Carina is a great option as it goes on liquid and dries with a coral-orange matte finish which stays put for at least three hours.
