The power of bamboo

Think bamboo is simply a panda’s favourite snack to munch on? Think again, as bamboo products are certainly making a splash in the beauty world at the moment.

Bamboo extract is a rich source of silica, a nutrient which helps keep skin and hair healthy. Not only is the ingredient non-irritating and soothing, it is also derived from a sustainable resource. Here’s some ways to incorporate bamboo into your daily regime.

Hair

Hair care products with bamboo can give a dose of strength and healthy shine to your tresses.

OGX Strength + Body Bamboo Fiber-Full Shampoo and the accompanying conditioner combines bamboo fibres and soy proteins, as well as a fresh scent, to give your strands incredible shine.

For an additional boost after washing hair, spray OGX’s Strength + Body Bamboo Fiber-Full Thickening Root Booster onto the roots to give your hair a lift. Or try Alterna’s Bamboo Smooth Anti-Breakage Spray, a heat protector which strengthens and smooths the hair strands and creates a robust thermal barrier that shields hair against temperatures up to 220C.

Skin

More and more skin care brands are offering up products which embrace the benefits of bamboo. South Korean beauty company Tony Moly has created a Bamboo Cool Water Soothing Gel, containing an impressive 99 per cent fresh Damyang bamboo water, which is said to be packed full or minerals and amino acids – making it ideal for soothing the face and body after sun exposure. As bamboo is rich in antioxidants, Eminence Organics Guava & Bamboo Age Defying Moisturiser is another favourite option to hydrate after cleansing and toning each night. While a swipe of Erborian Bamboo Matte Powder Effect Lotion will leave normal to oily skin looking perfectly mattified with a velvety finish. After cleansing, simply shake the lotion and dose 3-5 drops into your palms and apply over the face by gently pressing, patting and tapping into the skin.

Make-up brushes

Bamboo is growing in popularity when it comes to beauty tools as well. EcoTools has recently unveiled a new line of sleek make-up brushes, each of which features a handle made from sustainable bamboo. All of the brushes have a slightly tapered handle for improved comfort, with the line including a fan-shaped brush and finer tools for eyeliner and eyeshadow application.
