The gift of the grapefruit
You may not be partial to the taste of grapefruit but you'd be a fool to ignore the beauty benefits it boasts. What's that, don't know about them? Well let us share the secrets of the citrus fruit with you.
The grapefruit – which originated in Barbados - is actually an accidental hybrid, after a sweet orange and pomelo - also known as a shaddock - were crossed. First and foremost it's a great source of vitamin C, meaning it will brighten your complexion and help the production of collagen, which makes your skin look fuller and add elasticity. Redness will also be dulled as vitamin C helps tackle skin pigmentation.
Your hair will grow and get thicker thanks to the vitamin C too, as the antioxidant properties in the nutrient boost the immune system, resulting in thicker, stronger hair follicles.
Potassium is also found in the pink fruit, and a lack of potassium in the body can cause dry, flaky skin.
Grapefruit, along with other foods and skincare, will add some much-needed moisture to hydrate your skin. The nutrient also keeps things youthful and is known to disguise wrinkles and age spots, as well as helping protect against UV rays along with SPF.
Other skin inflammations like acne, rashes and psoriasis have all been found to benefit from grapefruit too, so there's plenty of reasons to get stuck in.
The seeds shouldn't be ignored though as they can help clear clogged hair follicles caused by dandruff and dry skin. Hair growth is impaired because of this, but with the seeds fighting bacteria on the scalp after being rubbed in your locks will be encouraged to comeback fuller and healthier.
As for how to approach the humble grapefruit, you can simply rub cool segments onto your skin and along your scalp, or you can make a homemade facemask.
Mix a teaspoon of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice with an egg white and natural yoghurt, and apply to your face for around 15 minutes before rinsing off with warm water. This will help greasy skin, whereas peels of a grapefruit microwaved with two tbsp of juice, 100ml of olive oil and rice flour will create a cleansing paste.
Alternatively, add some segments to freshen up a salad, or pop some into your morning smoothie for a tangy twist.
