The beauty of Manuka honey

Not just good to eat, Manuka honey is becoming a popular beauty and skincare ingredient.

Produced by bees foraging on the Manuka or tea tree plants which grow in New Zealand and throughout southeastern Australia, Manuka honey is defined by its typically dark cream or brown colour. A natural antimicrobial, this honey has long been used for its healing properties, and celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow and Kourtney Kardashian are big fans.

While it’s possible to eat Manuka honey raw or take it in capsule form, a number of beauty brands are including it as a key ingredient in their products.

Drawing on the ultra-moisturising properties of Harakeke, the New Zealand flax plant and active Manuka Honey, Living Nature’s Extra Hydrating Toning Gel is a great for rescuing dull, tired, thirsty, over-exposed skin by giving it a refreshing boost of hydration.

And Manuka Doctor fully embraces the power of this natural product, with the ApiNourish Repairing Skin Cream including Manuka, as well as Purified Bee Venom to nurture natural collagen formation. For an intense moisture boost, Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask can be applied to the face and neck to deliver a cleansing treatment which is ideal for targeting blemishes as they arise.

Or if you are keen to make your own beauty products, try creating a mask by mixing a little pure Manuka with a pinch of cinnamon and applying to the skin for 20 minutes before gently wiping off.

Another good way to use Manuka is for treating skin irritation. Living Nature’s Manuka Honey Gel can be used on bites, blisters, scratches and sores, to soothe and heal damaged skin. Similarly, PapayaGold Paw Paw Moisturising Balm is enriched with Bio Active Manuka Honey 20+, and is a topical balm that soothes, relieves and moisturises dry skin and dry chapped lips.

And don’t forget your hair! Palmers have just released a Manuka Formula Hair Care Range which includes a Shampoo, Conditioner and Leave-In Spray, all formulated with honey, as well as cocoa and shea butter – everything you need for lustrous hair.
