Take one hair clip...

Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication - one of Leonardo da Vinci’s rules to live by, but also a key principle for your daily beauty routine. Let’s face it, there are days when you just don’t have enough time to put on a full face of make-up or straighten your hair before work. At the same time, you don’t want to look like you’ve just come from a massive party the night before - luckily we have just the thing to help.

One perfect item to have in your hair product arsenal is a large metal barrette or hair clip. Sephora makes a great Day to Night clip, but you can also find similar ones online on ASOS, Madewell, Topshop, Urban Outfitters, or even your local drug or beauty store. The great thing about metal barrettes is they can work on any hair length or thickness and still look fabulous. Here are just a few ways to look to use them.

Up and Down

Take a quarter of your hair at the top and add subtle volume by back combing and teasing the underneath portion. This will help the clip stay in place. Add the barrette by picking up a section of hair that’s the same width as the clip, and snapping into place. If you’re feeling ambitious, set waves by using a barrelled curling iron on the section that’s not in the clip.

The Bun

Gather all your hair together to create a messy bun. Run the barrette across the middle and secure it. Finish with a few bobbypins and spread out your hair using your fingers.

Asymmetrical Ponytail

This low pony works best with straightened hair. Pull your hair to one side, swept behind your ears. Twist all your hair away from your face, while keeping the long ponytail directly behind your ear and next to your neck. At an angle, place the barrette in your tresses and clip in.

Twisted Bun

Back comb all your hair to add volume and texture. In sections, twist your locks up in one place to create a slightly tousled bun. Use bobbypins if needed to keep the hair in place. Lastly, use your large clip to secure your look. You can place it any which way you want, but at angle gives a chic look.
