Study up on spring scents

Spring is in the air, and so now is a good time to put away those heady winter scents and opt for something a little lighter when it comes to your signature smell. Whether you favour floral, fruity or a fresh fragrance, perfumers have got it covered. Here are our pick of the top bottles hitting the shelves this season.

Floral

Issey Miyake L'Eau d'Issey City Blossom

Japanese designer Issey Miyake is just as well known for his fragrances as he is his fashions, and he's yet to put out a dud smell. This latest offering, an offshoot of the classic L'Eau d'Issey, is a feminine fragrance, filled with floral notes. Devised by perfumer Alberto Morillas, it evokes feelings of a breezy springtime. With top notes including citrus accords and pink pepper, middle of osmanthus flowers, freesia, magnolia and base of Virginia white cedarwood and white musk, this flowery scent is light enough for daytime use, and has real staying power. The use of calone (oceanic, watery scent effect) comes through beautifully too.

Cheryl StormFlower

Not everyone turns to fashion houses for their fragrance, with celebrity smells a booming business. British star Cheryl Fernandez-Versini's StormFlower is a great choice for the changing season, with its light, feminine notes perfect for spring. Top notes of lemon work well next to the middle essence of rose.

Fresh

Penhaligon's Ostara

Ostara celebrates all things spring, focusing on the optimism of yellow daffodils. The sunny flower smells fresh and fabulous in this perfume, created by French perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. The English fragrance house has perfectly captured the essence of the flower; this is an elegant scent that will leave you longing for sun kissed skies and lighter days.

Mitchell and Peach English Leaf Eau de Toilette

Mitchell and Peach also have a fresh offering this springtime. If visions of freshly cut grass and the great outside are conjured up when thinking of spring, then English Leaf is the perfume for you. Spritzing yourself with a scent comprised of tomato leaf extract may sound more farmer than fragrance, but trust us, this works. With citrus notes, aromatic herbs and other fruity hints, this a striking choice which will leave people wanting to know just what you're wearing.

Fruity

Valeur Absolue Joie-Eclat

This sparkling perfume from Valeur Absolue combines the freshness of pink grapefruit with green cardamom, fine vetiver and musk. The result is a mild, feminine finish and its ingredients give it all day staying power. The scent is also available in miniature form, along with two other signature fragrances from the brand; Harmonie and Sensualite. The set is an ideal Mother's Day gift, with each bottle featuring semi-precious stones for extra WOW.
