Revealed: The perfect cleansing regime
Cleansing your skin is one of the most important parts of your beauty regime. If you let dirt and grime build up, it can lead to clogged pores and breakouts and an overall duller complexion.
As dermatologist Dr Zuhair Murad explains, outside factors can also play a role: pollution, sun and environmental damage all contribute to premature ageing.
To combat all this, he advises using a quality product - and not overdoing it!
"I recommend using a gentle cleanser that contains antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and hydrators. The combination of these three types of ingredients will leave skin fresh, hydrated and healthy without stripping the skin of its natural oils. With that said, it’s important not to over wash or cleanse obsessively as this can dehydrate the skin," he told Cover Media.
So now you know what to seek out in a product, but what should you avoid? Dr Rabia Malik has the answer.
"Avoid sulphate-containing cleansers. SLS can cause increased skin sensitivity and irritation. Gel-based cleansers are generally best at removing all traces of dirt and make-up," she said.
She also dispelled the myth that cleanse, tone, moisturise should be everyone's go-to regime. Instead, Dr Malik says toners are only advisable for those with very oily skin.
The perfect cleansing regime as advised by experts:
- Always cleanse before sleep. This is when your skin takes time to repair and can soak up all the goodness in the products you use. Use cotton wool or a Muslin cloth.
- Don't use a sulphate-based cleanser.
