Red alert

Red alert

Women with red hair are known for being passionate, fiery and full of confidence. As far back as the Egyptian times, red hair has been coveted by women, with A-list stars like Jessica Chastain, Christina Hendricks and Julianne Moore making it more fashionable today than ever before.

Hair colour pioneer Scott Cornwall argues that red can suit any skin colour, and gave Cover Media the lowdown on what red looks best on what woman.

True red

Think Christina at her Mad Men best. The US actress rocked siren locks to play Joan on the hit TV show, but Scott insists you don’t need to be ‘60s pinup to pull it off.

“Rich vibrant reds are best suited to those who have natural warmth in their hair and have bright or green eye colours,” he noted.

Brunette red

This is a more Julia Roberts-esque shade, and is perfect on ladies with dark eyes and tanned skin.

“This shade is really flattering for darker, more olive skin types and brown eyes,” Scott said.

Blonde red

Over her career flame-haired beauty Nicole Kidman has flirted with numerous shades of red, but for the last few years she’s kept with lighter tones. Paled skin lovelies like Nicole, this one’s for you.

“Lighter copper or strawberry blonde hair will suit those with paler skin and light coloured eyes,” smiled the expert.

Whatever colour you go for, Scott recommends using his innovative Colour Restore Deep Red treatment toner, which restores colour back into hair in just two minutes.

Fudge Hair’s Lock Shampoo and Conditioner also help hair hold on to colour, as does Wella’s Colour Recharge range, which come in different blonde, red and brunette versions.

As for what red you should chose, Clairol Nice n Easy has recently brought out two new colours as part of its Born Reds collection, which are longer lasting then previous offerings. The shades are softer and more natural looking, comprising of reds, golds and coppers that are bang on trend.
