Quench your body’s thirsty skin

Quench your body’s thirsty skin

We’ve put away the skin-baring summer frocks, and started cosying down for winter in woollens. However, seasonal changes can affect the texture and tone of your skin more than you might expect.

Dryness is a leading skin complaint, with over 40 per cent of visits to dermatologists relating to dry skin. Symptoms often worsen during winter and when body skin becomes very dry it may feel tight, scaly, flaky, very itchy and painful and, at the extreme end of the scale, extremely rough and cracked. So skipping a daily application of moisturiser just isn’t an option if you want to keep your skin feeling soft and supple.

Sonja Dymalovski, skincare expert at What Skin Needs tells Cover Media: “When looking for topical creams and balms make sure you look for organic formulas that are designed to reduce irritation and have properties that can repair the skin.

“In the colder months I would use a balm like What Skin Needs Skin Balm that contains natural oils that have anti-inflammatory properties like plantolin, aloe vera and tea tree oil.”

Tempting as it may be, it’s also best to avoid long hot baths and showers, and the skincare expert also advises regular exfoliation before applying your body cream.

For multi-tasking

A favourite with Gwyneth Paltrow, French brand Embryolisse’s Lait-Crème Fluid Multi-function Moisturiser keeps skin soft and supple and also works as a facial make-up remover, soothing after-sun, after-shave care, and baby care. It’s a lighter version of the company’s Lait-Crème Concentré with the same natural, nourishing and hydrating active ingredients. The velvety smooth lotion is ideal for all skin types, and is paraben free.

For firmness and tone

Murad Firming Peptide Body Treatment is a luxurious firming moisturiser that melts into an oil. It’s packed with peptides and antioxidants to improve the texture of your skin, and boost collagen production. The lotion contains glyco firming complex, a peptide blend rich in amino acids which visibly firms the skin, and grape seed oil for long-lasting hydration.

For cellulite

Tropic Skincare’s Body Love Firming Buttercream is a velvety cream, enriched with cocoa and shea butters to nourish and deeply hydrate. The gorgeous smelling body cream is enriched with green algae and pink peppercorn actives to help combat cellulite. Pair it with Tropic’s coconut oil based Body Smooth polish for a spa-like exfoliation before letting the moisturirser sink in.

For painfully dry skin

Gluten and paraben free, Hempz Triple Moisture Herbal Whipped Body Creme contains pure natural hemp seed oil for all day moisture and will condition skin for a healthier look. Those with eczema, psoriasis and sensitive skin, should check out MediHoney’s Natural Derma Cream. It contains medical grade Manuka Honey, with soothing oat extract, aloe vera, chamomile and plant butters to calm inflamed skin. Meanwhile Lotil Original is a classic rich cream specially formulated for healing chapped, cracked or dry damaged skin, and it’s easy on the pocket too.

Butter your body

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Body Lotion is a fail safe beauty buy to counteract dry and thirsty skin. The cocoa-scented formula is enriched with vitamin E, and sinks in skin easily. It helps to improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks and skin imperfections, and is a great budget buy. Combine with its Coconut Oil body oil for a two-pronged attack on dry skin.

Vegan-friendly Lavera Organic Exotic Body Lotion is made of fragrant organic vanilla combined with organic coconut and sunflower seed oils, shea butter and coconut extract. And it’s extremely rich in essential fatty acids to help maintain elasticity and suppleness.
