Prep pretty feet at home

If you're off on a summer holiday any time soon, or even a spring break, it's time to start thinking about baring all at the beach. No, we're not talking going topless - we mean your feet! After all, slipping into those new sandals is much more fun when you're all post-pedicure pretty. Here we give you the low-down on giving your feet the royal treatment, all from the comfort of your own home.

Step 1: Buff and beautify

You might think it makes sense to soak feet first, but hard skin is best removed when they are dry. If you're happy to put the work in, opt for a hand-held foot file like The Body Shop's bargain best-seller. Alternatively, battery-powered devices such as Scholl's Diamond Pedi gadget offer velvety-smooth tootsies in record time. Make sure you focus on the heels and balls of your feet, as these are the areas that take the most pressure day to day and are likely to be rougher.

Step 2: Soak and scrub

Here's the really relaxing bit: fill a bowl with warm water and add a gentle foot soak. You can either buy one readymade or make one with Epsom salts and a unique mix of your favourite essential oils. If you suffer from foot odour, add a tablespoon of baking soda, which makes feet less hospitable to bacteria. If you have marbles to hand, you can add these to the water and roll them around under your feet for a soothing massage. Once you're done, give your tootsies a quick once-over with a scrub and then rinse under the tap.

Step 3: Shape and moisturise

Next, cut your toenails so they're neat and short and not likely to do any damage to the surrounding toes. You can use a nail file after if you need to get rid of any sharp edges. Follow this up with a luxurious foot moisturiser, such as Burt's Bees peppermint version. Mint is cooling and perfect for tired feet.

Step 4: Colour me pretty

Now is the time to add a lick of paint to your toenails. You can match them to your fingers for a chic look or mix it up for more fun. Pastels look super pretty on tanned feet, so something like Barry M's Speedy Quick Dry collection is perfect. Included are a soft tangerine shade, baby blue and pink and a luscious lilac. What's even better: a quick-dry varnish means it won't be long till you can get out there and show your pretty feet off!
