Peppermint Beauty Benefits

We’re at the end of the holiday season, and although we’re slowly packing up decorations and finding homes for our newly acquired presents, there’s one staple of the season that is seen year round - peppermint.

Peppermint is most prominent during the holidays, since we see it in candy canes and chocolate bark and even in our festive coffees and lattes. But peppermint is actually a great ingredient for your beauty regime too.

Perhaps one of the reasons why it’s used so much around this time is its cooling sensation, which is synonymous with the winter months. A hybrid between spearmint and water mint, peppermint has been used for centuries, ranging from cleansing agents to therapeutic qualities and even its ability to cure those pesky winter colds and flu.

As a herb, peppermint is chock full of nutrients which provide a number of health and skin benefits. It’s rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, dietary fibre and Omega 3 fatty acids. Clearly, peppermint can be a great addition to your daily beauty routine.

Using peppermint products for your skin can have a wide range of positive effects. In topical creams, it creates a soothing treatment for things like rashes or sores, and has a strong healing effect. It can also come in handy to fight sun-related problems like burns, as the vitamins and Omega 3 fatty acids cool and soothe your skin. It also balances pH levels in skin to help stop the production of excessive oils, resulting in the reduction of acne and breakouts. And if you want to go to the herb itself, peppermint leaves have long been used to treat oily and greasy skin. The menthol in peppermint reduces the secretion of oil and helps you get oil-free skin naturally.

Peppermint also comes in handy for your hair, as it rejuvenates your strands. When massaged into the scalp, peppermint again helps to balance pH levels to neutralise excessive oil production, thus reducing greasiness. It also stimulates hair follicles and increases blood circulation in the scalp to promote hair growth. Not to mention, using any kind of hair or skin product with peppermint will leave you smelling like the holidays all year round.
