Pastel power

Pastels are once again making a major splash in the beauty world.

With Pantone's decision to pair soft blue shade Serenity and the ethereal Rose Quartz as their joint colours of 2016, pastels are now inspiring new makeup trends - with everything from lipsticks to blushes - getting the watercolour treatment.

Accordingly, spring is prime time to explore the brightest and boldest of the year’s fresh crop of beauty trends, so why not try these soft shades by playing with pretty nail colours, drenching your eyelids in pastel blue hues and dusting on delicate blush tones that evoke the sun-kissed feel of days to come.

This season’s pastels allude to the colours of blooming gardens. To feel really garden party ready, paint your nails in the gorgeous violet polish Spinning Teacup by Ciate or try Essie’s classic soft pink Ballet Slippers.

Think bluer is better when it comes to this spring’s top eye colour? Go with shimmering navy, or cover the lid with a hint of Yves Klein blue, and scribble your way to a seriously smouldering stare with an eye pencil that glides seamlessly such as NARS' Larger Than Life Long-wear eyeliner in colour Rue Saint-Honore. For a more daring look, use Chanel’s Blue Rhythm Quad. Or opt for a subtler feel by gently sweeping your lids with the pretty pinks shades in Yves Saint Laurent Couture palette Parisienne.

Kiss lacklustre lips goodbye and cover your pout in a blush pink. Mimic the runway’s velvety lips by first exfoliating dead skin away and then selecting a long-wearing lipstick that has matte finish, like MAC’s neutral pink named Velvet Teddy. But make sure you line your lips for longer-lasting wear, and begin by marking your cupid’s bow with a small ‘x’ before, using a nude coloured lipliner such as Smashbox's Always Sharp in shade Light Pink.

And for the best springtime selfies, forget filters and give your skin a nourishing beauty treatment instead. Moisture is key for luminosity, so layer hydrating oil underneath your moisturiser to guarantee a healthy glow.

After the long winter months, if you feel you need a little extra help to achieve a sun-kissed glow, now’s the time to break out the bronzer.
