Oils for beginners

Using oil as part of your nightly beauty regime has become common place for a lot of women, with stars like Kate Moss, Miranda Kerr and Gwyneth Paltrow all devotees. However dipping your toes into the world of oil can be daunting, especially if you're worried about already oily skin. But don't be scared! The benefits can be seen, and felt, almost instantly, with a brighter and more nourished complexion just two of them. Oil also acts as the skin's lipid barrier, protecting against extreme temperatures, dry climates, and over-cleansing. It can also combat greasiness, as it balances out your skin's oil content meaning skin doesn't need to pump out excess sebum (to overcompensate for a lack of oil!).

Oil make-up remover

The easiest way to start incorporating oil into your routine is with a cleansing oil make-up remover. Rather than slather the oil on and sleeping in it over night, this can be used in the shower or when you wash the day's grime off. It can be put straight onto the skin, adding a pump or two to dry hands and rubbing into the face, including over eyelashes to remove mascara. Or add a little water for a milkier consistency. You'll be amazed at how much it can remove, and how quickly it does it. DHC's Deep Cleansing Oil is one of the world's most popular, with bareMinerals Mineralixirs Facial Cleansing Oil and Clinique's Take The Day Off Cleansing Oil other smart choices.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is a kitchen and bathroom staple, and odds are you, or someone you know, uses it in some way. For beauty it can be used as a hair mask, lip balm or even a cuticle softener. Using it on the face and skin will inject an instant boost of moisture, and it can be used as it is or with other ingredients. Try adding 1 tablespoon of honey, 1/2 mashed avocado to two tablespoons of coconut oil for a homemade, hydrating face mask. Or add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to 1 tablespoon of coconut oil for a softening scrub.

Overnight

There are so many amazing face oils to use overnight, but as this is a lesson for beginners, let's not get too excited. If the thought of sleeping in a face of oil freaks, or grosses, you out, then Darphin's new launch is the perfect choice. It's 8-Flower Nectar Oil Cream launches on October 1 and is a luxurious cream that transforms into an oil gradually as you sleep. Infused with essential oils from eight anti-ageing flowers, including neroli, jasmine and iris, shea butter, vitamins C and E, tapioca and a plant oil blend, this cream is as indulgent as it is effective. Skin will soon become soft, smooth and supple. You'll be graduating to one of Darphin's oils in no time.
