Natural sunscreens to snap up for summer

With summer in full swing, now is as good a time as any to give natural sunscreen a try.

Often gentler than chemical-based sunscreens which tend to have inherently complex formulations, sometimes problematic for those with sensitive skin, mineral sunscreen forms a layer on skin which reflects UV rays, as a mirror reflects light. And with more and more brands embracing the trend, sun seekers are no longer limited to thick organic sun cream versions which don’t fully absorb into the skin or leave behind a white residue.

While some sunscreens can make the skin greasy or irritated, the latest crop of facial sunscreens on the market will shatter any excuses you have against wearing sun protection every day. A great option for day-to-day wear in the summer is Coola Classic Face SPF 30, which offers broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. Crafted with 70 per cent organic ingredients, such as Vitamin C rich strawberry extract, this unscented cream is fast absorbing, non-greasy, and can be worn underneath foundation.

Warmer weather means many of us head outdoors to play sport or leisurely hikes. Developed for those who aren’t afraid of building up a sweat, Bare Republic Natural Mineral Sunscreen Sport SPF 50 is a longer lasting, water resistant sport sunscreen. For best protection, apply liberally 15 minutes prior to sun exposure and reapply 80 minutes after swimming or sweating. This lightweight, non-greasy sunscreen also has a light natural coconut vanilla scent. For those planning a sun-drenched holiday in exotic locale, quality sunscreen is a must. German brand Lavera has just launched SPF 20 sun spray and SPF 10 lip balm which are made with 100 per cent natural mineral ingredients to keep skin safe, with the vegan certified formula suitable for the whole family.

And though we might not consider the impact of sunscreen use on our surroundings, scientists in a 2015 study reported that the sunscreen surfers, snorkelers and beachgoers dutifully slather on before a swim was harmful to coral and reefs around the globe. To counter this problem, EQ EVOA has developed a range of sun protection products free of parabens and chemical filters which they claim have no impact on coral or the marine environment. EQ EVOA’s Sun Creams range from SPF 15 to SPF 50, are certified organic and are rich in oils and antioxidants.

Keep sun safe

•Avoid sun from 12 noon to 4pm, the hottest hours of the day. Keep hydrated by drinking water.

•Opt for an efficient sunscreen, with an SPF adapted to your skin to ensure adequate UVA and UVB protection.

•Apply generously before sun exposure - not forgetting feet, ears and neck.

•Repeat application every 2 hours, especially after swimming.
