Mood-boosting skincare

Mood-boosting skincare

We all want to feel good when pampering ourselves, using various lotions and potions in the process. And some ingredients in skincare may even have more mood boosters than you realise; from feeling more relaxed, too more awake.

So the next time you stock up on some treats to use on a quiet Friday night, look out for the following:

A well-known and much-loved ingredient which will help boost your mood is lavender. The purple plant is known for its calming properties and its recognisable scent is one that will no doubt have you in a state of calm in no time. After a stressful day, pick up a bath foam with lavender in it or a body moisturiser boasting the flower to really help unwind.

But it isn't just calming; lavender could also be used to increase alertness and help concentration. It might even be the answer to doing well in a meeting or exam!

The same goes for rosemary, which also aids areas such as memory recall. Known as one of the most popular aromatherapy oils for as long as can be remembered, rosemary has been praised for its remedial properties and the way it keeps disorders at bay.

Just having a whiff has been proven to reduce the levels of stress hormone cortisol. If you're going through a bad-skin phase, you'll probably become increasingly inflamed the more you worry about it. Rosemary helps your mouth produce saliva, which is full of free radicals (reactive oxygen species), and in turn helps your skin's appearance improve.

Neroli, also known as Orange Blossom, is a natural antidepressant and is often used to ward off sadness by bringing sensations of joy. It's also been linked to boosting libido (you'll have to use the oil to find out for yourself on this one...)

So where can you find these mood-boosting must-haves?

The first place you should turn to for lavender offerings is Yardley's - its English Lavender Moisturising Body Lotion is a great option to nourish your skin and get the benefits with its almighty scent.

Rosemary is an acquired taste, so if you don't want to go full-on with something like Avalon Organics Rosemary Hand & Body Lotion, try Burt's Bees Fabulously Fresh Peppermint & Rosemary Body Wash. While it isn't overwhelming, the subtle scent will be enough to relax you in the shower and, who knows, maybe even boost your memory.

As for neroli, you could treat yourself with TOM FORD Neroli Portofino Body Oil.
